After over two decades, the unsolved murder of San Francisco girl, Mei Leung, 9, has been linked to the infamous serial killer, Richard Ramirez, also dubbed the ‘Night Stalker.’
After several years, investigation into Mei's murder fell into the hands of the San Francisco Police Department’s cold case detectives.
According to CBS News, Inspector Holly Pera says the case has haunted her for 25-years. Finally, on Thursday, Ramirez was linked to Mei’s murder via DNA.
Pera said “I was a new police officer at the time. That’s part of the reason that the case was relooked at. It’s the type of case as a new officer, a case involving a little girl that you don’t forget.”
Ramirez, 49, is currently on death row for 13 murders committed in 1984 and 1985 in the Los Angeles area. During that time, area residents were terrorized by a killer who would strike in the middle of the night and leave bloody satanic symbols at his murder scenes. Ramirez gained access to his victims’ homes through unlocked doors and windows.
In 1985, just prior to his capture and arrest, San Francisco couple, Peter and Barbara Pan, were shot to death in their home. The murders were thought to be the work of the 'Night Stalker,' although Ramirez was never tried for them.
Mei’s murder occurred in the basement of a San Francisco hotel where she and her family lived. Ramirez was reportedly staying at hotels in the same neighborhood during that time.
Crime lab technicians were recently able to extract DNA samples from some of the items collected at the scene of Mei's murder. According to CBS, Ramirez’s DNA profile in the existing Combined DNA Index System matched the DNA collected at the scene.
On Wednesday, officials collected a new DNA sample from Ramirez to confirm the match. Once confirmed, it will then be up to the district attorney to determine if new charges will be filed against the 'Night Stalker' for killing Mei.
