We expect a certain amount of prosperity in our lives.  We expect that we will make a reasonable living, be for the most part happy, and live out a relatively healthy and long life.  These are our expectations.  But what happens when things don't go quite as we expect?  Are we willing to take only the good from God and not the bad?

It is easy to accept what is good.  We give thanks for our blessings and attribute them to the grace of God.  Our successes we might credit to him if we are humble.  But are we willing to attribute the misfortune's that befall us to the will of God as well?  There is no circumstance that exceeds the reach of his power.  He could lift us out of our misery in a mere twinkling if he were just to will it.  But he does not.  Are we supposed to go down fighting?  When do we stop wrestling with God and accept that he gives us harsh circumstances as much as he blesses us?

It has been said that hard times build character.  The Lord chastens those he loves, although it might not feel like love at the time.  A child might resent his discipline but when he is older he is thankful for it.  It is the same with us and God.  We aren't being punished as much as we are being instructed.  If we accept the hard times as being from the Lord then a burden is lifted from us.  For we can not change what happens to us, we are only accountable for how we react to such changes.  He does not judge us for being rich or poor but he sees only the heart.  We need to be strong when the hard times come.  For some, they are already upon us.
