Most do not notice utility boxes until they have been painted. This particular utility box is located at the corner of Hollister and Coronado, the second exit for Imperial Beach as one heads south on the 5 Fwy. This utility box was painted by 17 year old Vilma Fonseca, one of the most prominent and upcoming young artist in the Southwest United States. She did this box as part of, "The Art Kids of San Diego County" (TAKOSDC)program. They work with Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, San Diego and Coronado to help beautify the cities by painting utility boxes throughout the southland.
Vilma has already been accepted to the famous art institute in Chicago where she plans to continue her career in art. She was accepted on the first interview because of her vast experience and because of her incredible talent in the field of art. She has just finished a commission for Aesthetics, Inc., the contractor for doing the interior art for the medical industry. Vilma created the wall covering designs for a portion of the second floor in the new children's wing at Rady's Children's Hospital in Chula Vista, CA.
Ms. Fonseca is a senior at Coronado High school where she is carrying a 3.70 GPA and is a member of their CoSa program. Vilma is also the lead artist with TAKOSDC and teaches the younger kids in the program how to paint and draw. She is also working on the new murals for Bibbey's Shell Shop located on Seacoast in Imperial Beach. She is a dedicated artist and is extremely talented when it comes to visual arts. At 17 Vilma has accomplished what most adult artists look for in an art career. Her paintings sell for over $500.00 and when competing for the Rady commission she competed with over 100 adult professional artist. She was one of the six chosen for this project. If one wanted to see her work they can see it on the TAKOSDC website: www.takosdc.com
