Unfortunately, there has been yet another celebrity death this summer. John Hughes is said to have collapsed while taking a morning walk in Manhattan on August 6th. It is reported that he died later that day as the result of a heart attack. John Hughes is best remembered for his career as a film director, writer, and producer. He has written many eighties classics such as Mr. Mom, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, She’s Having A Baby, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and many more. John Hughes will also always be remembered for his work as a writer in the 1990’s. Some of John Hughes’ best work of the 1990’s include:

Home Alone (1990), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Home Alone 3 (1997)

There is no doubt that Home Alone and its sequels were one of John Hughes’ greatest commercial successes of the 1990’s. Macaulay Culkin played the rambunctious yet lovable and adorable little boy who is accidentally left behind by his family, not once but twice, when they depart for a family vacation. In the first movie, Kevin’s (Culkin) entire family leaves for a Christmas vacation without realizing that he is missing. In the time they are gone, Kevin must live independently while fighting off two house robbers, Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) who have planned to break into what they thought was a vacant house.
In Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Kevin makes it to the airport with his family; however, he accidentally boards a plane to New York City instead of Miami with the rest of his family. Hilarity ensues when Kevin coincidentally runs into his former enemies / house robbers, Harry and Marv, who have just escaped from prison.
Home Alone 3 does not feature the original members of the Home Alone cast. The movie focuses on Alex (Alex D. Linz), a young boy who has stayed home sick from school. After confusion with her luggage, Alex’s neighbor ends up with a remote controlled car, which she gives to him. What she doesn’t know is that four terrorists have hid a microchip necessary to their operation in that toy car. The four terrorists are now on the search for their chip and Alex must attempt to fight them off all on his day home from school.

Curly Sue (1991)

Curly Sue is a family comedy starring James Belushi as Bill Dancer, a homeless man caring for his young daughter, Curly Sue (Alisan Porter). The two often run small scams in order to get a free meal or a place to sleep. One night, they attempt to trick a young lawyer, Grey (Kelly Lynch), into believing that she has hit Bill with her Mercedes. When Grey actually does hit Bill, Grey takes the two home with her to spend the night. Grey eventually gets to know them and learns they are homeless and opens her home to them. Bill realizes he can no longer keep Curly Sue on the streets with him and must find her a more comfortable home.

Beethoven (1992)

Another family comedy, Beethoven was actually written under John Hughes’ pseudonym Edmund Dantes. The movie is centered around a St. Bernard dog, Beethoven, who has found himself in the hands of the loving Newton family. The head of the family, George Newton (Charles Grodin) does not particularly like dogs; however, his wife (Bonnie Hunt) and children quickly fall in love with Beethoven. Beethoven becomes part of the family by helping the children fight off school bullies, saving them from drowning, and helping them gain the courage to talk to their high school crush. A deranged veterinarian and two con-artists try to claim that Beethoven has attacked them and that he must be put to sleep. His owners fight for him, even George, and Beethoven lives happily ever after with the Newton family.

Dennis the Menace (1993)

Based on Hank Ketcham’s comic strip, Dennis the Menace, follows the daily life and summer escapades of a young mischievous boy, Dennis who is constantly doing something to annoy and aggravate his next door neighbor, Mr. Wilson. Dennis’ parents have a difficult time finding a babysitter who is willing to tolerate him and are forced to leave him with the Wilsons for the weekend. Switchblade Sam, a known criminal, has found his way into Dennis’ crime-free neighborhood and one night Dennis is stuck with the psychopath who plans on keeping him as a hostage. The movie ends well, but as a child the movie was quite intimidating and at times frightful.

101 Dalmatians (1996)
John Hughes’ 101 Dalmatians brings the 1961 animated film to life with a cast including Glenn Close as Cruella De Vil, Jeff Daniels as Roger, Joely Richardson as Anita, and Hugh Laurie as Jasper. The film also features ninety-nine real Dalmatian puppies as actors. 101 Dalmatians did extremely well at the box office and during its VHS and DVD releases. In fact, it did so well that in 2000, a sequel, 102 Dalmatians, was released.

Flubber (1997)
Flubber is also a remake of a 1961 classic film, The Absent-Minded Professor. Flubber follows the kooky and absent-minded scientist, Phillip Brainard (Robin Williams) as he tries to create an alternative energy source that will save his love, Sara’s (Marcia Gay Harden) college where she is the president. In the process of doing so, he accidentally creates flubber, or flying rubber. After missing their wedding date, Phillip is in a constant battle to win Sara back. He utilizes flubber to help win her back and to help the college basketball team win the championship.
