Exactly one year from today, June 18, 2010, will be one of the most highly anticipated days of 2010. Why? That is the proposed date that Buzz, Woody, and the gang will be reunited on the big screen in 3-D for the third installment of Toy Story, the first full-length Pixar movie which debuted in 1995. A sequel, Toy Story 2, was produced only four years later in 1999. To date, Toy Story 3 will be Pixar’s eleventh full-length feature film. Every film has achieved tremendous success and recognition, and there is no doubt in my mind that Toy Story 3 will continue this trend. Pixar has even released a statement explaining that they “are not against sequels, but believe they should only be made if they can come up with a story as good as the original.”
Not many details regarding the film have been released, but we do have an idea of the basic plot. It is centered around Buzz and Woody and the rest of Andy’s toys as they are dumped at a day care center because their owner, Andy, will be leaving for college. The majority of the original cast will be returning, which is always a sign of a successful sequel. Tom Hanks will be returning as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, Joan Cusack as Jessie, Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head, Wallace Shawn as Rex, Jodi Benson as Barbie, and John Ratzenberger as Hamm. It is rumored that Michael Keaton will be providing the voice of Ken; however, this has not been confirmed. Keaton is a smart and interesting addition to the all-star cast. Unfortunately, two of the characters will have different voice artists. Both Slinky Dog’s and Wheezy’s voice artists have passed away within in the last ten years.
Lee Unkrich, who co-directed Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., and Finding Nemo, will be replacing John Lasseter as the individual director of Toy Story 3. The script was written in a mere weekend and the voice artists, director, and production team began working on the film in April 2009. Unkrich and many of the animators thought it would be a good idea to shave their heads prior to beginning work on the film as an effort to begin with a “clean start.” Unkrich joked, “Now that my animators and I are bald, here’s the plan: see who can go longest without a haircut or shaving.” The team seems to be having a blast working on the film.
As far as marketing the film, Pixar has not done much yet; however, there is a great deal to look forward to. On May 29, 2009, they released the first trailer with the new Pixar movie, Up. On October 2, 2009, Toy Story and Toy Story 2 will be re-released as a double feature in 3-D. Also many, companies have begun making children’s toys to market the film.
