An interesting way to recap a decade is to review the commercials that aired during it. Some commercials became national pop culture phenomenon during this decade. For example, Taco Bell’s Spanish speaking Chihuahua became somewhat of a celebrity. Everyone could recall the ad and stuffed toys that repeated the Taco Bell slogan “Yo quiero Taco Bell” were even created in its image. Budweiser enlisted the help of its signature bullfrogs to advertise its beer. It also created the popular slogan o“Wassssupp,” often used by college aged young men at the time. Pepsi, The Gap, Mentos, and many other companies created memorable ads with catchy slogans or jingles that many people can still recite today. Let’s take a look at the most memorable commercials from the 1990’s.
1) Hallie Kate Eisenberg has starred in many movies and TV shows since her debut as the Pepsi girl in 1998. She has starred in movies such as Paulie, Bicentennial Man, Beautiful, How to Eat Fried Worms, and will be appearing in a new movie titled Holy Rollers. However, she got her start acting in a few commercials for Pepsi. She was loved for her girlish sweet and innocent demeanor that would take on another form after sipping a Pepsi. She takes on the voice of the Godfather in one commercial and the powerful and grandiose voice of Aretha Franklin in another. Marlon Brando and Aretha Franklin star in the commercials with her.
2) Budweiser had many signature commercials in the 1990’s. Of the most popular are the ones that featured the Budweiser signature frogs and the ones that started the “Wasssup” craze. This phrase was heard worldwide. Years later, the commercials are still being parodied. Scary Movie, The Simpsons, Saturday Night Live, and ESPN’s Sportcenter all parody the classic commercial. The phrase was even turned into a hit dance song in the UK. It’s hard to believe that such a simple and idiotic phrase became such a huge phenomenon. 3) Taco Bell’s commercials created an automatic pop culture craze. The Spanish speaking, Taco Bell craving Chihuahua became the most lovable dog on TV. By simply uttering, “Yo quiero Taco Bell”, the Chihuahua created an instant marketing success for Taco Bell. The dog starred in many Taco Bell commercials and took many adventures: he goes on a romantic dinner, wanders the streets of what appears to be a Mexican village, wanders New York City, battles robots, and even hides from Godzilla. Small stuffed animal replicas that uttered the phrase “Yo quiero Taco Bell” were sold at Taco Bell restaurants across the country. 4) The Gap known for its clothing basics produced many commercials in the 1990’s that were all focused around some sort of singing or dancing scene. In every commercial, there are dozens of people dressed in a variation of one trademark item from the Gap, such as khakis, a leather jacket, jeans, or a fleece “Tec” vest, usually paired with a basic Gap T-shirt. All of the commercials involve some kind of bizarre song and dance about jeans and khakis. 5) By the end of the 1990’s, everyone knew that Mentos was “the freshmaker.” All of the Mentos commercials highlight its catchy jingle and a scenario in which a problem arises. All of the problems are solved with a “fresh” idea. For example, the young businessman on his way to work sits in wet paint and decides to simply roll around in it to create a pinstriped suit. The popular 1990’s Beverly Hills teen comedy, Clueless, even features a short scene in which Brittany Murphy sings the Mentos jingle.
