The summer months are great for airing out diapered bottoms. Warm weather and time outdoors makes it easy for babies and toddlers to wear only breathable fitteds or prefolds, with no cover over top. As the days get chillier, however, the layers start to pile up and breathability becomes more difficult. This can pose a problem for children who need constant air circulation to keep diaper rash at bay.
Fortunately, it's possible to keep your child's bottom well-aired and still wear "regular" clothing with fleece pants. It's not the cotton-blend fleece that's found on sweatshirts and sweatpants. Often called performance fleece and polar fleece, it's usually 100% polyester. It repels liquid more readily than absorbing it, making it an ideal cover for cloth diapers.
Fleece soakers are common diaper covers and are popular for night and nap use. Fleece pants and sleepers work the same way. Since they are looser-fitting, they allow more air to reach the bottom, especially when using a prefold or fitted made from natural fibers.
To use, simply put the fleece over a non-waterproof fitted or prefold diaper. Fleece pants also make a good "insurance" layer over waterproof diapers for naps or nighttime. If the fleece is not damp, it's not a problem to use the pants for several diaper changes. Fleece can also be rinsed, hung dry and reused when alternating pants.
Fleece pants and sleepers are found in many department stores and stores like Old Navy. If unsure that the pants will repel rather than absorb, be sure to look for pants that are 100% polyester. Also check for words like "micro", "performance" and "polar." Most fleece clothing is competitively priced, making it easy to have a variety of pants without spending a lot of money.
