Shane MacGowan of The Pogues doesn't wear stockings.
Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole please step aside. The classics will always be special, but if you find that your collection is getting stale this holiday season here are ten unconventionally Christmassy tunes to keep you from becoming a grinch.

10.) Trans-Siberian Orchestra – Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 – My friend Danimal says a TSO show will change your life, but he’s the kind of guy who pre-orders seventh row seats for the New Kids on the Block. The scary thing is, Danimal is on to something, this song rocks, despite the fact that TSO sounds like death metal Yanni.

9.) The Flaming Lips – Christmas at the Zoo – Animals celebrate Christmas too. Disagree? Look at all those pets that get gifts. The Flaming Lips know this, and they tell us in this song about trying to free all of the animals at the zoo on Christmas Eve.  The catch, the animals don’t want to leave. Oh those crazy Flaming Lips!

8.) The Dan Band  - “Rock You Hard this Christmas” – A novelty band known for covering Bonnie Tyler and Styx in the movie “Old School” lead singer Dan Finnerty  wants to "fill your stocking with his candy cane of joy” and doesn't care who knows it in this epic song where November Rain meets Tenacious D.

7.) James Brown – "Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto" – It’s a safe bet that Santa Claus has some sort of system mapped out for Christmas Eve, but J.B. doesn’t care. “With water in his eyes,” The Godfather of Soul superbadly instructs Santa where the first delivery of the night should be the only way he knows how, with soul.

6. ) AC/DC – “Mistress for Christmas” – It’s hard to believe that “Thunderstruck” was released only 18 years ago on The Razor’s Edge. Often overlooked, this song from the same album features a howling Brian Johnson wishing for another man’s woman while Angus Young slams power chords with make your ears bleed “Acca Dacca” perfection.

5.) Eels – Everything’s Gonna Be Cool This Christmas –California rocker Mark Oliver Everett’s guitar soaked three minute Yule tide groove will send a warm fuzzy feeling down your spine. Plus, any song that boasts “Baby Jesus, born to rock” before busting into a guitar solo is alright with me.

4.) The Sonics – “Santa Claus” – These garage rockers helped establish Seattle rock music in the mid-60s and this classic song about asking Santa for what you want and getting no reply is a welcome change from conventional Christmas crooning.

3.) Low – “Just Like Christmas” – In 1999 the Minnesotan indie rockers made a Christmas album for fans, the highlight was this timeless, beautiful, bittersweet travelling song about being on the road at Christmas. Even your grandma will like it.

2.) Slade – "Merry X-Mas Everybody"  – Loved in the UK like Americans love Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” and recorded while John Lennon was recording Mind Games next door. This working class anthem about forgetting your rough past and looking towards the future at Christmas time is a universal classic.

1.) The Pogues“Fairtytale of New York” – “It was Christmas Eve babe, in the drunk tank.  An old man said to me, “won’t see another one,” and then he sang a song, ‘The Rare Old Mountain Dew’. I turned my face away, and dreamed about you.”  Simply one of the greatest holiday songs ever penned.
