Fashion editor Simona Supekar's hot picks for B2S.

This year’s back-to-school shopping season offers the most fashion-forward, fun and affordable items. Simona Supekar, Fashion Trend Editor for SHOP.com has selected her favorite clothes, backpacks and accessories to differentiate and distinguish your kids from the pack!

What’s Hot, What’s Not: Students have their own unique characteristics that explode from the first to the last days of school. Back-to-school kids’ fashions are definitely being influenced this year by adult fashions, says Supekar.

The art of pairing. Dresses are really popular this year. You can pair them with a blazer and leggings or cozy knee-highs for cooler temperatures. Supekar suggests this Graphic Tee Dress for teens or a Vintage Boat Dress for younger girls. For boys, brands like Akademiks cater to both men and boys and make great graphic tees.

Don't miss the Marc. Marc Jacobs just launched a new back to school collection called “Don’t Miss the Marc” especially for female teens. The line features stretch denim, cute graphic tees, jersey blazers, and more. Most items are under $100.

Back to the 80’s! For girls, neon colors reminiscent of the 80s are hot!

What's still popular? Hot pink, electric yellow, and bright green as well as jungle and animal prints--especially for tights and dresses. Supekar loves this Kensie girl Juniors Animal print dress.

Layers. Boys will continue to layer their looks for fall, choosing graphic tees to go over long sleeve basic shirts. Or for a preppier look, Polo shirts like this Lacoste shirt will be a hit.

It’s in the bag. A cool backpack is a must-have. Dakine Heli Packs are sturdy and sleek for teens while younger kids may want a Transformers backpack. For girls, a Supekar's favorite is this Melissa Beth Piggy Back Backpack in Purple Royalty.

Techno Power! The more sophisticated our world becomes, the more students will rely on technology for success in school. HP Mini Netbooks are a fun, stylish tool and they come in Pink Chic! Or this Cygnett Groove Time II iPod Alarm Clock, a top pick according to this year’s Better Homes & Gardens Back to School guide.
