Just when you thought the Eastern Pacific had gone to bed for the summer…
She delivers long period juice from the south. It’s been a long time since surfers in the area have seen a run of south swell like this.
Last week delivered semi-clean 2 to 4 foot south swell and at times hundreds of surfers could be seen enjoying a bit more tropical weather and surf than one would typically expect to find in San Francisco. Monday morning surprised many with 4-foot, 17-second energy coming from the south. While Ocean Beach can pull in swell from this direction towards the north side of the beach, it’s not the best spot for south swells. Regardless, with the clean morning conditions, there were plenty of surfers out enjoying some unseasonably good surf. As the weather clears and the swell is due to keep pumping, a little drive up or down the coast could produce some stellar surf.
The San Francisco Bay Area is full of surf spots. Every surfer has his or her favorite south swell sand bar, point or reef. This week, you’ll see a lot of SUV’s with surfboards on the roof driving out of town.
There are all kinds of surfers in San Francisco and one thing they all have in common at this time of year is that they are all surf-starved. You can expect packed line-ups and at times tense crowds, as many haven’t filled their cup in a long time. If you find yourself in a situation where the crowd is a bit heavy rest assured this swell will last all week and after a day or two, everyone seems to mellow out a bit.
The weather should be getting quite nice for the rest of the week and the fog and flatness are sure to return next week. So grab your favorite stick and go get some waves. When you’re through surfing grab a beer at Park Chalet or a slice at Noriega Pizza. If you’re surfing in the morning, grab your coffee at Java Beach. Most importantly enjoy the surf.
