Childcare 101: Getting a daycare discount
If you feel like most of your paycheck goes to daycare costs, you may think there’s nothing you can do, but there is. Daycare tuition is not always a fixed cost and many times you can get a discount just by asking. Here are a few tips on how to approach your provider.
You’re a good customer. Remind her or him that you’re on time both with tuition and to pick up your child. You bring
supplies when asked and your child has attended full time for at least six months. You’re the kind of parent providers hope for.
Ask for 10-15% off. Daycare centers have overhead and set prices and home providers have to make a living wage. Asking for more than 10-15% off is asking for more than most will be able to do. You may already be paying your provider’s best price. A few quick phone calls asking
competitor’s prices may confirm your great deal or give you an idea of the average
rate in your city. In the Dallas area, quality childcare for infants to 3 year olds can range anywhere from $150 a week to $250 a week. Expect to pay more near urban centers and anywhere with high property values.
Don’t give an ultimatum. If you need to, cite the economy as your reason for asking. Most providers have families and understand balancing a budget. Asking for a discount is fine and reasonable in tough economic times, but make sure your provider knows it is a request and not a demand. Becoming too demanding might endanger your status as a good customer and good customers have the most bargaining power.
