In many cases, home daycare is best, but there are times when a daycare center is the right choice. A daycare center can provide the perfect situation for after school care, parents who work late hours or parents who use childcare vouchers. Tips for choosing a daycare center are the same as a home daycare with a few additions.

As always, start your search at the Department of Family and Protective Services website. You can look at a daycare’s listing and see what sort of violations they have on recent inspections. Some violations are minor, like missing paperwork and some are major such as not completing employee background checks.

One problem many daycare centers share is a high rate of employee turnover. A good daycare center will provide incentives to retain good employees, so check the employment section of the website. Check other job search websites, such as Craigslist. Is that particular chain or location always hiring?

Because the number of children in care is greater in a center than in a home, a daily report is a good idea. Not only will saving reports help you look for patterns in your child’s health, development and behavior, but daily reports keep the care providers organized and on schedule. It's also a great way for the provider to communicate with you rather than trying to talk during drop-off or pick-up.

Cameras are now available in most chain daycare centers and many independent centers as well. When your child is enrolled, you are given a password to log into the center’s website where you can watch your child’s daycare room online in real time. Also, you should be allowed to drop in and visit your child at any time during the day. Be suspicious of any center that does not have an open door for parents.

Bring your child once you’ve narrowed your search down to your favorites. When he or she looks at home, you know you’ve found a good fit.
