Root Liqueur

Live and direct from Philly, it’s the Legendary Root Brew!  No, it’s not the legendary Philadelphia-based hip hop maestros The Roots.  It’s Root – an organic sugarcane-based 80 proof spirit from Philadelphia-based outfit Art in the Age.  So, what exactly is Root and why is it important to you?  First, the history.  Root was a popular spirit throughout the 1700s that was all but eradicated by the temperance movement of the 1800.  During this time the alcohol was stripped from the concoction, giving us what we know today as Root Beer.   So, you might be asking, how is this stuff different from a Root Beer liqueur or a glass of Root Beer with some booze dropped in?  Well Root drinks a bit more like a whiskey with some earthy, spicy, and vanilla notes and is not overly syrupy or sweet.  But why is it important to you?  Because it is tasty and boozy of course!  And it can be enjoyed in a variety of ways.  Here’s a few of the ways that Mr. Cocktail and I found to enjoy this tasty spirit:

Staight Up aka Rogue Style
We tried Root both neat and on the rocks.  Root basically comes with its own built in mixer with it’s spicy and vanilla Root Beer notes, so this is a great way to drink it.  It also leaves a nice lingering warmth in your chest.

Root and Stout
Drop a shot of Root into a pint of Guinness Stout and you’ve got a way to add a little spice to your Guinness.

Root and Cream
4 oz cream soda
2 oz root
Stir ingredients into a glass and drop in a maraschino cherry.
This was probably my favorite way to mix Root.  The vanilla in the cream soda blends well with the hooch to the point that you won’t even know that you’re drinking booze which is a plus and eventually, probably a minus.

Root Miner
1 ½ oz Gin (I used Plymouth which is also great in this drink)
1 oz Root
1 oz sweet Vermouth
Shake all ingredients in an ice-filled shaker and strain into a Martini glass.
In this case, the Root stands out to add some complexity to this Martini-like concoction.

Now that you’re sold on Root and need some immediately, you now want to know where you can run out and get some as soon as possible. Root is available in some states and can be purchased online. You can pick up a 750ml bottle for $39.
