Feeling a little bit sick one rainy afternoon, with all the early symptoms of a cold, I suggested we try Vietnamese pho, the traditional healthy soup that I’ve heard so much about. Luckily for me, there’s a place near home in Cleveland Park called Nam-Viet Pho ’79, one of a chain of Vietnamese restaurants in the area.
The décor in Nam-Viet is, well, somewhat shady, with walls a strangely bright shade of yellow and faded paintings hanging here and there, but the food more than makes up for it. The two of us started with an appetizer of spring rolls, which were nearly as good as the ones at Spices, much to my delight. Our next appetizer was actually an entrée which looked so good we didn’t want to pass it up – ground shrimp grilled on sugar cane skewers. The ground shrimp was more like shrimp mousse and was incredibly flavorful.
Our main course was, obviously, pho. We ordered two different kinds and were served enormous bowls of steaming, fragrant broth. One was filled with crab and shrimp wontons, the other with spicy beef and noodles, and both were excellent. We barely made a dent in our servings, opting to take them home, and we found out that they actually taste great the next day too.
Our entire meal totaled about $40, and there was enough soup left for a meal the next day. And I have to give them bonus points for the hot towels they brought us after our meal. But the best part may have been that my oncoming cold completely disappeared. That’s worth $40 any day.
