Eat, drink and hang out at The Heights in Columbia Heights
I don't get to spend that much time in Columbia Heights. It's something of a hike for me, but every time I go, I wish I hung out there more often. My newest discovery there is The Heights, a restaurant owned by the same group that does Commissary, Logan Tavern, and Grillfish (more on these in a later post). I think if I lived in that area, The Heights would be one of my favorite neighborhood hangouts.
Sitting on the patio at The Heights is certainly a big draw in the summer, but in the winter, the dark, candlelit interior with large booths is a cozy spot to eat dinner. The menu is extensive and priced on the cheaper side – I don't know of many other places where you can order steak frites for $18.50 – and everything I've tried has been good. Fried baby artichoke is a great appetizer, although I found out that artichokes shrink a lot when fried, so order the large if you're sharing. The mussels are nicely done, the sandwiches are good, and the fries (always important!) are crispy. And definitely don't miss out on the crab and shrimp mac 'n cheese.
The best part about The Heights might be its wine list, which is affordable on any budget. Most of the bottles are priced between $19 and $35, with a few more expensive ones. Glasses are around $6 or $7, and a couple varieties are even cheaper than that. We recently ordered a Malbec for $25 and it was a great value.
The Heights is a great option on a date night or when you're just going out with friends. Whether or not I ever move to Columbia Heights, I think I'll be hanging out at The Heights a lot more often.
