Gov. Rick Perry claimed the lives of some of the legislature’s few accomplishments last week, amongst them, he vetoed a bill designed to increase the state’s existing funding for half-day pre-kindergarten programs to cover a full day and to enforce new quality standards.
The measure fell before Perry’s pen late last week, with the governor noting in his signing statement that he wanted the proposed $25 million to go toward expanding the number of students in the existing program, rather than expanding the program for those already covered.
He wrote, “$25 million would serve more than 27,000 students over the next biennium, which is 21,000 students more than the estimated 6,800 students that would have been served under the bill’s proposed program - or a 305 percent increase.”
It’s an odd way to take stand, though, considering that even with the veto, the funding simply goes into effect with the quality standards.
The measure had broad support in the House from both sides of the aisle.
