Only 22 days from pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training and the Mets still need to put the finishing touches on their rotation. The Mets spent most of their off-season revamping the bullpen that cost them a post-season appearance; but the organization still needs to complete the starting rotation. The team signed Tim Redding (pictured on right) but allowed Derek Lowe to walk out their door and head to divisional foes, the Atlanta Braves.
Their top focus remains another Scott Boras client, Oliver Perez. Perez turned down a meek 3 year offer for $30 million a couple of months back. This time it doesn’t seem Boras has another team interested, and therefore cannot use to drive up the Mets price on the 27 year-old southpaw. The longer it takes to reach a deal with Perez, the more rumors will circulate that the Mets are looking at other options.
A published report has linked the team to former Milwaukee Brewer, Ben Sheets. Sheets is very comparable to recent Yankee acquisition A.J. Burnett. Both have great stuff but are prone to spending time on the disabled list. An encouraging sign was that Sheets pitched 198 inning in 2008 (his highest total since 2004). Sheets in his career is 86-83, with a 3.72 ERA, and 1.20 WHIP, and has 1206 strikeouts in 1428 innings pitched.
Other options mentioned in the article include John Garland, Randy Wolf, and possibly former Yankee Andy Pettitte. Tony Jackson believes that Wolf is closing in on a deal with the Dodgers. Both Wolf and Garland have recently turned down offers from the Diamondbacks.
In minor news, the Mets have signed OF Cory Sullivan, formerly of the Colorado Rockies. Sullivan, 29, is a great defensive outfielder but is far too comparable to players already on the roster: Jeremy Reed and Angel Pagan. The three figure to fight for one spot on the 25-man roster. None are worth owning in fantasy.
