After weeks of stagnant activity things have been sizzling the past 2 days for the local Baseball teams.  Dominos have certainly begun to fall at the MLB winter meetings in Las Vegas.  A couple of moves are reported as only waiting for a physical to make official and both are significant.  The Mets get their closer and the Yankees get their stud ace.

C.C Sabathia – The Yankees have reportedly gotten their man to the tune of 7 years and $160 million – the richest contract for a pitcher in MLB history.  This deal is rumored to not be complete until a couple kinks are worked out and Sabathia passes a physical.  Sabathia single-handedly carried the Milwaukee Brewers to the playoffs last season and is the 2007 AL CY Young award winner.

Sabathia is a bonafide ace.  Last season he combined for 17-10 record with 251 K’s and a 2.70 ERA, and a sparkling 1.11 WHIP.  He was dominant for the Brewers and proved he can carry a team on his shoulders.  He is an anchor for anyone’s fantasy squad.  Last season was his 2nd in a row with over 200 K’s and his 3rd in a row with an ERA under 3.25.

It remains to be seen how the new Yankee Stadium will be fore pitchers but it is hard to imagine Sabathia struggling.  He will get his wins for a Yankee team that will have a significantly better rotation than last season.  He will strikeout more than 200 and keep his ERA in the mid-to-low 3’s.  His WHIP will also help your team which makes him a 4 category stud.  Just watch the innings pitched in recent seasons: 241 in 2007 and 253 last year.  He is in the top of the pitcher pool this season but I still prefer Johan Santana and Jake Peavy regardless of where he ends up.

Other reports

1) Jon Heyman of SI.com is reporting that the Yankees are close to agreeing to a deal with free agent pitcher Derek Lowe for 4 years worth between $68 and $75 million.

2) Yankees and Braves are in an apparent bidding war for free agent pitcher A.J Burnett.  As of this posting the Braves are the rumored front-runner with a 5 year $80 million offer.

- - 8:22 PM Eastern time update: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports the Yankees have offered a 5th year to A.J Burnett

- - 11:42 PM Eastern time update: FOXSports.com is reporting the Mets have acquired former Mariner closer J.J Putz in a 3 team deal involving the Indians.  Putz would serve as the main 8th inning option and lose all fantasy value pitching behind K-Rod... Reports indicate that the Yankees have swooped in with a 5th year for a total of $91 million for A.J Burnett.  We'll see if it's enough.
