Hot stove baseball has been underway for a week as teams try to improve on last season. The Yankees figure to be the busiest team in the offseason. Players still have a week to file for free agency but that has not stopped the dominos from starting to fall.
The Lame Ducks
The Yankees expect OF Bobby Abreu to sign elsewhere but would receive compensatory draft picks if they offer him salary arbitration. The same can be said for RP Damaso Marte who is expected to have his $6 million option declined. The Yankees will be in the market for a corner OF and RP to back up closer Mariano Rivera.
The Yankees today opted to decline the 2009 options on 1B/DH Jason Giambi and SP Carl Pavano, making both free agents. Giambi’s successor figures to have plenty of fantasy value. GM Brian Cashman has expressed interest in bringing back Pavano, and why not? Nine wins in four years is worth it.
In the pursuit of ….. big names
C.C Sabathia – Reportedly interested in playing on the West Coast and NL. Brewers have already offered a contract; Yankees are expected to offer everything including the kitchen sink to woo him.
Jake Peavy – Stud pitcher has added the Yanks to his list of possible destinations if the Padres can work out a trade. Padres expected to ask for 2B Robinson Cano, and prospects Phil Hughes and Austin Jackson.
Matt Holliday –Rockies are likely to trade the all-star OF before the trading deadline in 2009. To accommodate this move the Yankees would need to first move Hideki Matsui to open a spot for the slugger. The Mariners have been mentioned as a possible destination for Matsui which would kill his value.
Manny Ramirez – New York Post believes the Yanks will push for the colorful slugger. He would be a fantasy monster in this lineup batting between Jeter and A-Rod.
A.J Burnett – A name mentioned during the season that interested Hank Steinbrenner. Burnett filed for free agency today. He strikes out a lot of guys but is a constant injury risk.
Too close to call…..
Pitchers Mike Mussina and Andy Pettitte are still undecided about returning next season. Mussina’s agent has said he is in no rush to decide; Pettitte has reportedly said he would like to return to the Yankees next season.
Reformers report
Phillip Hughes – Hughes had a great start this week in the Arizona Fall League going 5 innings with 0 runs, and 8 strikeouts. Previous to this start he sported a 5.68 ERA in 12 and 2/3 innings.
Austin Jackson – Jackson went 0-4 on Tuesday dropping his numbers to 2-21, 0 walks, and 7 strikeouts in his last 5 games.
Humberto Sanchez – Has hit a wall in his return from Tommy John surgery. He has given up 10 runs with only 1 strikeout in 2 and 2/3 innings.
