First it was streaking on college campuses back in the ‘70s. Then the naked cowboy who isn’t really naked, but close to it, playing his guitar and posing for pictures on a daily basis in Times Square. Just a couple of weeks ago there were comedians speaking of South Carolina’s Governor Sanford walking the Appalachian Trail sans clothing. And now, a naked passenger on a US Airways flight on Tuesday evening.
Say what? Yes, a male passenger en-route to Los Angeles from Charlotte decided, for reasons unknown, that he would disrobe and fly naked. The aircraft diverted to Albuquerque where the passenger, Keith Wright (no known relation to the Wright brothers) of the Bronx was taken into custody.
Wright was seated in the “rear” of the aircraft when he started taking off his clothes. When a flight attendant asked him to put his clothes back on he was unresponsive. After multiple requests for him to get dressed were ignored, the flight attendant covered him with a blanket, which he promptly removed. When Wright punched and kicked the flight attendant, two off-duty law officers who happened to be on the flight subdued and handcuffed him prior to the flight landing in New Mexico. The flight diversion was actually for a previous medical emergency, so both situations were handled upon arrival.
Prior to departure from Charlotte Wright had been seen dancing in the boarding area, but when questioned by a US Airways airport supervisor he told her that he had just one beer. Since she didn’t smell alcohol, it was determined that he was okay to continue on the flight to California.
According to other passengers on the flight, Wright was completely naked as he was led off of the aircraft in handcuffs. Thank goodness this wasn’t a flight diversion to the Twin Cities in January! Wright faces federal charges of interfering with flight crew members and is to appear in court today, presumably wearing his new orange jump suit.
