Planning a trip to New York and looking at flight options? Be sure to consider Southwest Airlines (www.southwest.com), which inaugurated new service on Sunday from Chicago’s Midway Airport. The new service offers five daily non-stops to close-in La Guardia Airport, and four of those flights offer easy connections for passengers originating in Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Currently, the only affordable way to New York from the Twin Cities is to fly into JFK International Airport. While both La Guardia and Kennedy are located in the New York City borough of Queens, La Guardia has long been the preferred arrival point for travelers heading into Manhattan. While JFK does have a better mass transit option into the city with AirTrain (www.panynj.gov/airtrain), La Guardia is a short taxi ride to Midtown Manhattan, which is the primary destination for tourists.
Not only are Southwest’s fares very attractive, but there are no fees to check baggage, which will leave the savvy traveler with more money to spend in New York. Additionally, Southwest’s fares are less restrictive than those of the larger carriers, as are their change and cancellation fees. Chicago’s Midway Airport is a tremendous airport for connections as there are no long walks required between gates. The airport consists of just two concourses, and both feature moving sidewalks to make the connection ever easier. The food court with a huge number of dining options is perfectly situated where the two concourses converge.
An on-line search of Southwest’s fares between MSP and New York La Guardia found web prices as low $69 one-way. As always, Southwest does not require a round-trip purchase in order to obtain their lowest fares.
If Long Island is your destination rather than New York City, Southwest also offers daily connecting service from Minneapolis/St. Paul via Chicago to Long Island MacArthur Airport (www.macarthurairport.com). Located in Suffolk County, MacArthur is the way to go for travelers heading to Suffolk and much of Nassau County and wanting to avoid the traffic in the city.
Another advantage of Southwest’s service from Minneapolis/St. Paul is the Humphrey Terminal, which is a much less congested facility than the main, Lindbergh Terminal. Located north of 494 at the 34th Avenue exit, the Humphrey Terminal offers a major parking facility accessible by skyway directly into the terminal. Additionally, both Park ‘N Go (www.parkngo.net) and Park ‘N Fly (www.pnf.com) are located just one mile from the Humphrey Terminal and can be reached at the 34th Avenue exit by turning south one block.
