Much like a traditional seeker to the path of enlightenment motorcycle riders come to discover a certain "connection" with their surroundings as they ride.
It may a short jaunt to the store a few blocks down the road, or that multi-day road trip done alone: sooner or later that seemingly small realization grows to a shift in one's awareness.
An epiphany will manifest - of you becoming cognizant of...everything around you and your ride. The barrage of scents and smells, from the surrounding plants and trees, to the cologne or perfume worn by the driver in the vehicle ahead of you; the sounds that draw your attention over the rush of wind past your ears. Even the warm and cool spots you feel in the air as you cruise down the road's hills and valleys.
It is these experiences we discover as we transition from the "newbie" rider to the seasoned rider.
In part reliving them is the draw one might feel when you haven't ridden for a while.
And it's no use trying to convey these feelings to a non-rider; they simply have to experience it themselves.
If you fear being alone, try a half-day trek around the familiar parts of town first. Allow yourself to rediscover the neighborhood, or the part of town where you grew up. You may find that you enjoy being with yourself just fine.
Be brazen and wave at people - acknowledge them as you pass by.
Venture on to a full day's riding and discover things about yourself that perhaps were lying dormant, waiting for that ride to reawaken.
You may find you are more at ease: with yourself, and your family and friends. Things that might have been bothering you, stressing you out, are no longer such bothersome things and you are now able to derive their solutions.
The moment you sit on your bike a light switch is flipped within and you find yourself smiling. At nothing. At everything.
You have attained a facet of the Oneness with your ride, the road...your part of the world.
Go ahead. Drop it in gear. Roll out low and slow. And remember: breathe deep. Relax. Ride.
