Let's be honest. No matter what Philadelphia Magazine says, there are no good piano bars in Philly. Yet.
This is why I'm looking forward to the opening of Jolly's Rockin' Piano bar that promises the allure of 2 (two!) dueling pianos banging out hits that people actually want to hear. According to the signs, Jolly's should be opening any day now...hopefully. And is located in a neighborhood central to all -- 20th & Chestnut, holla!
Forget Cascamorto's -- while the musical talent is the best of the bunch, the crowd is a random mix, the song requests border on the sometimes bizarre and often self-indulgent (Really?! Bonnie Raitt's "I can't make you love me"...Really?!) and the drinks are so strong that I actually count their rum & coke as one of the worst I've ever sipped (although extra points for recession era value). And sadly, I could be convinced to go back. If only because their musicians are actually good. The secret is to arrive early, hoard the piano player's attention, and leave before the regulars shuffle in and begin singing showtunes.
2nd Street Annie's -- is appealing in that Wildwood, Jersey Shore type of a way -- they get the music right (and know all of the great hits that people want to hear at 1 a.m. ahem, Bruce Springsteen) but it can get crowded and the atmosphere feels a little, well, Jersey Shore. Lots of jean shorts, tank tops, and grinding on the dance floor. Plus, the dueling pianos appear to be made out of dueling keyboards. Just something to consider if you're a music purist. However, Annie's wins hands-down in terms of fun appeal. After all, they're currently advertising bachelorette parties on their website. Yowza.
