Modernmom.com CEO Brooke Burke and the DC DOH promote healthy motherhood
Timed with the June launch of the new ModernMom.com, Dancing with the Stars champ and co-CEO Brooke Burke vowed to eat only green foods for one week as way to jump-start the summer with energy and a renewed focus on a healthier lifestyle. To be more specific, she primarily ate green vegetables, which are high in fiber, help restore energy and cleanse the system. You can read about her experiment here: http://www.twitter.com/brookeburke.
The folks over a ModernMom.com were kind enough to share one of Burke’s recipes:
GREEN CRUNCH

Combine the cucumber, celery, and parsley. Add a tablespoon of pesto, you can buy it ready made in a jar or prepare it yourself. Add a squeeze of lemon and a T of olive oil. Mix together.

ModernMom.com was recently acquired by Burke and internet pioneer Lisa Rosenblatt. The Web site and it looks neat – there is a definite focus on health and wellness, as well as looking and feeling good. (Which the ladies know is important for our physical and emotional health as well!)
It's obvious – busy moms can easily neglect their health. Web sites like Modernmom.com can help empower mothers to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to be a good example for their kids. In Washington DC, the focus on healthy motherhood is especially important. The DC Department of Health (DOH) recently released the 2007 report on infant mortality rates in the district. The findings were bleak: In 2007, the infant mortality rate for the District was 13.1 compared to a national average of 6.5. The complete report can be found at doh.dc.gov.
To fight the high infant mortality rate, DC Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Dr. Pierre Vigilance, Director of the DC DOH, recently launched a public information campaign titled "I am a Healthy DC Mom." The campaign aims to increase awareness about infant mortality and promote healthy pregnancies in the District of Columbia.
"Healthy moms are more likely to have and keep healthy babies," said Fenty. "This new public awareness campaign will help moms in the District make the choices that will give their babies the strength they need to grow and thrive."
Mothers who are aware of the best ways to take care of themselves and their child during and after pregnancy will be better equipped to make the best choices for their child’s health. "I am a Healthy DC Mom" asks DC mothers to commit to forty weeks of prenatal care, staying fit and eating right, and keeping their baby safe and healthy – similar to the message promoted by Brooke Burke and ModernMom.com.
