Vinegar has long been touted as a remedy for all sorts of health problems, but the latest research shows it can also help people stay slim by preventing fat from being stored in the body.
According to one recent research study in Japan, evidence provided proof that vinegar can prevent fat accumulation by activating genes for fatty acid oxidation enzymes. The genes produce proteins that aid in breaking down fats; thus, helping to inhibit the accumulation of fat deposits in the body.
The research study was conducted on laboratory mice at the Central Research Institute of the Mizkan Group Corporation in Japan. The lead researcher, Tomoo Kondo, and his colleagues divided the mice into three groups. Each of the three groups were put on a high-fat diet, with one group receiving the addition of a high-dose of vinegar, the second group receiving a low-dose of vinegar, and the third group (the control group) receiving only water.
At the end of the study, the mice in both the vinegar groups showed a 10% reduction in fat compared to the control group that received only water. According to the researchers, whose findings will be published in the July 8th issue of ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the results of this study suggest that vinegar suppresses body fat accumulation by increasing fatty oxidation and thermogenesis in the liver through PPAR-alpha.
The researchers wrote, “We intend to perform further clinical studies to confirm fat pad reduction and energy consumption enhancement by vinegar intake. Moreover, we will investigate the effect of acetic acid on fatty oxidative activation in other organs, particularly skeletal muscle.”
If additional studies confirm what was found by Kondo and his colleagues in Japan, vinegar can be successfully used in the future as a tool for weight loss.
Commonly used as an ingredient in salads, pickles, and other foods, vinegar is full of healthy vitamins, minerals, fiber, enzymes, and pectin, all of which are good for your health by helping to maintain healthy blood pressure, blood sugar, and fat levels in your body.
