People have tried all kinds of yoga for fitness and for their overall health, but its Bikram that has them all talking due to the heat. And to increase the heat in the North Beach studio there was a special guest at the end of July, teaching a class, Vice President Rajashree Choudhury.

“Its an honor to have Rajashree Choudhury teach for us. We are all looking forward to it.” Johnny said who is the Director of North Beach Bikram Yoga.

Bikram yoga (claims) to help with spine correction, diabetes, arthritis and knee problems as Bikram himself had shattered his knee and mended it due to his own practice. “This form of yoga is particularly good for westerners due to their diet and not exercising enough.” Stated Johnny.

How does Bikram yoga work? The studio room is hot by design to gain the therapeutic benefits. When Bikram did yoga in India, he was used to the heat so he incorporated it into his practice. "Heat warms the muscles, can help you stretch further and heat makes your heart rate go up and down,” said Johnny. "We do a total of 26 postures to help the body."

Over the last ten years Bikram has exploded onto the yoga scene. There are 350 studios around the world and most of the studios are in big cities in North America, Asia, Europe and Australia. Bikram has been petitioning for this type of yoga to be included in the Olympics, when the Olympics go to India.

Johnny has seen the studio busier due to the economy,“ A lot of working professionals have been coming to the studio due to all of the recent layoffs. Our memnbers tell me they are in a better frame of mind to interview for a job by practicing more yoga.” Bikram said “ People fall back on yoga as self therapy and to stay sane during this economy.” The North Beach studio has been busy during the months of May and June, busy mostly with neighborhood people.

Bikram famously once said, “ Never too sick, never too old, never too late to start from scratch again.” So try a class and feel the burn with the heat.
