People magazine's top bachelor pick for 2009 follows the youthful vibe in Hollywood with Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford on the cover. The single girls' anticipated issue hits stands today, but the People web site revealed the news Thursday.
Chace Crawford is known to CW teen drama fans but will no doubt gain a wider recognition with his upcoming role in the remake of "Footloose". The original casting choice for the redo was Zac Efron of "High School Musical" fame, but he backed out of "Footloose" and is now the front runner for another musical remake - "Saturday Night Fever". Efron was also chosen by People magazine as one of the top bachelors of the year. Adding Robert Pattinson ("Twilight", "New Moon") to the list makes it a regular Prom King lineup.
Single girls of all ages must realize the issue has an extensive feature article covering many other bachelors, but the front runners reflect Hollywood's hot list in publicity and very recent puberty. Okay, they're all over twenty, but they have careers based upon younger roles. They have been packaged by the media to this point as very young love interests, so this new, sexy bachelor presentation may form a bridge to their future acting roles.
I suppose any male beyond high school is considered an eligible single, but the fan base of screaming school girls makes these celebs seem too young for bachelor status. Twelve-year-olds pleading with Robert Pattinson to "bite me" just doesn't sound the same from 30-year-olds yelling it along the red carpet. But, there are single gals of all ages who favor these gents, and would argue that Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Hugh Jackman (insert sigh) have had recent turns on the cover of People. They were in the 'Sexiest Man Alive" issues, but the point is the same. Can we pause again for Hugh Jackman?
People magazine knows what it's doing. The younger fans will clamor for copies to wallpaper lockers and bedrooms, they will Twitter to friends and text to fan sites all weekend, and they will remind their parents of teen idols adored in previous generations who stirred the same excitement.
Bachelors? Virtually. Eligible? Attainable? Well, we're in LA together so anything's possible.
