Every time a weather issue like a hurricane or tropical storm occurs, travelers are left wondering...
Will my flight be able to be changed? Will I have to pay an extra fee? During the past several months, when storms have threatened safe travel, the major airlines have offered to allow passengers to rebook within a certain time period without a penalty.
Delta Air Lines announces travel options for its customers whose flight plans may be affected by Hurricane Ida
Are you booked on a flight operated by Delta, Northwest Airlines or a Delta Connection carrier to, from or through the following Gulf Coast cities through Tuesday, Nov. 10? If so, you may make a one-time change to your travel schedule without fee but tickets must be changed by Nov. 11, 2009.
• Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
• Gulfport-Biloxi, Miss.
• Mobile, Ala.
• Panama City, Fla.
• Pensacola, Fla.
• Tallahassee, Fla.
Delta will proactively reduce flight schedules to and from affected airports to ensure delays are minimized during the storm. However, customers may wish to consider postponing or rerouting their trip without penalty to avoid possible inconvenience.
Travel for changed itineraries must begin by Nov. 11 and changes to origin and destination may result in a fare increase. Any fare difference between the original ticket and the new ticket will be collected at the time of rebooking. Customers whose flights are cancelled may request refunds. Complete details are available at delta.com and nwa.com.
All customers traveling to, from or through impacted Gulf Coast cities are encouraged to visit delta.com or nwa.com to check the status of their flights before arriving at the airport. Updates on flights also are available by calling 1-800-325-1999 (Delta) or 1-800-441-1818 (Northwest).
American Airlines has a Hurricane Protection Policy
For American Airlines travelers, the aa.com website now has a Hurricane Protection Policy listed. It begins by saying: "American Airlines understands that some severe weather events may cause you to consider changing your travel plans. With this in mind, we offer our Hurricane Protection Policy."
"If you are ticketed for travel within the area and dates of a hurricane watch issued by the United States National Hurricane Center, American Airlines will offer you the convenience of the following options (in addition to normal cancellation rules)."
The page goes into canceling your reservation, rescheduling your travel to the same destination, or changing your travel to an alternate destination. It also states:
"American Airlines may issue a more lenient policy regarding changes and cancellations once a storm is imminent. If this occurs, all affected customers will be able to apply the more lenient policy to their changes."
