Oh, to be in London now that fall jazz is here.
Turns out, this is a particularly good week to be an English jazz fan. Friday, for example, kicks off the London Jazz Festival, 10 days of music at various venues featuring performances by Bill Frisell, Chick Corea, Chris Potter, John Scofield, Bobby Hutcherson, Kurt Elling, Aaron Parks, Marcus Miller, Regina Carter, Sonny Rollins, Melody Gardot, Stanley Clarke and Vijay Iyer, among many others.
In anticipation, the Telegraph newspaper today issued its list of the 100 best jazz recordings. The discs are arranged chronologically rather than ranked by merit and jazz’s acknowledged landmarks are duly represented.
That said, I was happy to see some personal favorites made the grade, including Lee Morgan’s “The Sidewinder,” Hank Mobley’s “Soul Station” and Brad Mehldau’s “Art of the Trio.” There is plenty of room for debate, too: Rollins’ “Saxophone Colossus” over, say, “Tenor Madness”? I don’t think so. And can I say that I prefer “Blue Train” to “Giant Steps”?
