Welcome to First Set, a rundown of the best live jazz to be heard this weekend across the region, as well as a look at the week ahead.
THURSDAY
David Sanborn: This sax star has cut a wide swath through American music over the past 40 years, from his late ‘60s days with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band through soloing on some of the ‘70s best pop records to his own long solo career. He comes to the Bay Area with George Whitty (keys), Nicky Moroch (guitar), Richard Patterson (bass) and Gene Lake (drums). 8 and 10 p.m.; also 8 and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday. Yoshi’s, 1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco. $5-$40.
FRIDAY
Melody Gardot: SFJAZZ presents this New Jersey-born, Philadelphia-educated vocalist with a band featuring Irwin Hall (saxophone), Ken Pendergast (bass), Chuck Staab (drums) and Behn Gillece (vibes). Her latest album is “My One and Only Thrill.” 8 p.m. Palace of Fine Arts, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. $30-$70.
SATURDAY
Henry Butler: Another SFJAZZ event, this one spotlights some of the most powerful, soulful New Orleans blues piano you’re ever likely to hear. 8 p.m. San Francisco Conservatory of Music. $30-$50.
SUNDAY
Brubeck Brothers Quartet: Siblings Chris (bass) and Dan Brubeck (drums) boast some damned impressive jazz DNA but to catch them live is to realize they’re a lot more than just a chip off the old block. Click here to read a profile. 4:30 p.m. Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society, Douglas Beach House, Miramar Beach, Half Moon Bay. $30.
And pencil these in…
Brubeck Brothers Quartet: Mon., Yoshi's, San Francisco
Marcus Roberts: Tues., Yoshi’s, San Francisco
