The star of reality TV's Britain's Got Talent is not a young heartthrob. In fact, she herself says that she looks rather like a garage. But wow, can Susan Boyle sing.
When the 47-year-old Boyle walked onto the stage of the British version of American Idol, the audience laughed at her. The judges rolled their eyes. What made her so laughable was that this frumpy middle-aged woman appeared so confident.
Few important lessons take so little time to learn. When Boyle opened her mouth and began to sing an aria from Les Miserables, the audience did a complete about face. They gave a standing ovation midway through her performance. They sat in stunned silence while the judges tried to pick their jaws up off the floor. One judge said it was the most surprising performance in his three yeare on the show. Another apologized for laughing at her. Even Simon Cowell couldn't stop smiling.
Boyle chose an important venue to teach us all that appearance is not everything--or in this case, anything at all. Scan the crowd of Britain's Got Talent, and one finds scores of impressionable, image-conscious teens. Young people today live in a media-centric world that rewards good looks. Kim Kardashian has her own TV show not because she is smart or entertaining, but because she is sexy.
It is difficult for parents to teach our children that it is what's inside that counts. Difficult, but no longer nearly as necessary. Just show your kids Boyle's performance on YouTube (if they haven't already watched it). Be sure to turn up the volume. Susan Boyle will teach your children for you.
