Old Man Winter has blown away the children who usually play in the parks. The campgrounds are empty. The wooded walking trails are quiet. And the rec centers are booming!

Every Friday afternoon, my son spends 45 minutes painting and gluing in a toddler art class at the Oak Marr Recreational Center in Oakton, Virginia. Afterwards, we watch the toddler swimming and yoga classes. (Yes, apparently some three-year-olds can do yoga.)

County rec centers in the Washington metro area offer everything from ballet to woodworking for kids. This morning, I enrolled my son in a kids’ soccer class. Ten weekly sessions, 45 minutes each. Cost: $69. It’s run around time during a season that seems to encourage laziness. It’s cheap, it’s safe, and it’s a great diversion.

Fight the boredom! Look into your own county’s park and rec classes this winter.

Alexandria: Registration begins December 15.
Arlington County: Registration begins December 18.
Fairfax County: Registration began yesterday (December 2).
Prince George’s County: Registration is already open.
Montgomery County: Registration is already open for most classes, but starts December 10 for swimming classes.
