Two weeks ago, Michelle Obama visited Washington to scope out schools for her daughters. I predicted the Obamas would choose Georgetown Day School for their children. (See article.) I was wrong.

Sasha and Malia will attend Sidwell Friends School after they move into the White House in January. According to Michelle Obama’s spokesperson, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, the school can provide the privacy and security the future first daughters need.

Sidwell Friends has already proven its reputation for privacy. It has so far remained stubbornly impenetrable to reporters. Administrators refused to tell journalists whether the girls even visited the school last week, did not immediately return phone calls, and said the school would not issue any statement until at least Monday, November 24th. Even school parents remain tight-lipped.

Sidwell Friends is no stranger to Washington’s political elite. Chelsea Clinton and Al Gore III (the former Vice President’s son) graduated from the school. Joe Biden’s grandchildren are current students. President Nixon’s daughter attended it.

Sidwell Friends has two campuses: a lower school in Bethesda for kindergarten through fourth grade, and a middle and upper school in Northwest Washington for fifth through 12th grade. This suggests that Sasha and Malia will attend different schools for the first few years, as Malia is in fifth grade and Sasha is in second.

Tuition is pricey. Sidwell students (or rather their parents) pay $28,442 per year in the lower school, and $29,442 in the middle school. There are just over 1,000 students.
