Holiday Gift Ideas for Newborns

If you find yourself cluelessly shopping for a young boy this Christmas season, let me help. My son has accumulated dozens of gifts in his few short years and has become quite an amateur gift tester. Here is my first installment of gift ideas, tailored to newborn boys aged zero to three months

Books
Simple board books make nice presents, particularly the touch-and-feel or lift-the-flap kind. A newborn won’t play with these yet, but he will soon. My son’s favorite board books were Touch and Feel Farm and Cars, Trucks, Trains and Planes. Do not spend a lot of money on each book—when the baby does play with it, he will likely use it as a chew toy.

Clothing
Everybody buys babies clothing. It’s a great present (and lightweight to ship), but focus on clothes for older babies, such as the 9-12 month size. Trust me—the little guy will have more than enough outfits from other people to get him through his first few months.

Toys
Buy a toy if you like, but a newborn won’t play with it until he is much older. If you just can't steer yourself away from the toy aisles, buy something that attaches to a car seat or that makes noise.

Baby Gear
A stroller makes a great gift. My son loved his Combi stroller, which collapses nicely in the hall closet when not in use. Be prepared to spend some cash for a decent stroller, though--Combis cost $200 or more. Get a stroller with a sun shade and a drink holder, if possible.

For those on a smaller budget, a Baby Björn carrier is also useful. Many moms wear slings, but  most dads won’t wear them.
