Local Library Book Steals
We all want our children to read. One of the best gifts we can give them is a love of books, a way to escape into an imaginary world with nothing more than a paperback novel.
Unfortunately, filling a bookcase with new children’s books can cost a fortune. Renting them at the library is free, of course, but you still have to remember to return them. And both new books and rented ones are often victims of tooth marks, crayons, and (my son’s favorite) torn pages.
Don’t despair! There is another way. The metro area’s libraries have book steals—I mean sales—that are totally worth attending. Children’s hardback books are typically $1.00, and paperbacks are $0.50. You can buy a boxful for $20 or less.
There are usually large sections of children’s books and young adult books for sale. They are donated by library patrons, so they are not former library rentals. Most of them are in pretty good shape.
You may not want to show up exactly when the book sale starts. You’ll be competing with a crowd of diehard readers while trying to watch your own children. Go an hour or two before the sale closes. At most metro-area book sales, there are more than enough good reads for everyone. And if there aren’t, there is always another book sale just a few weeks away!
