Our "School'd & Sip'd" Earl Grey Martini expertly
taught by Adam of The Boston Shaker and expertly
enjoyed by the BFF and friends.

If you're lucky the pace of summer is just a bit slower than the tempo the rest of the year.  If you're really lucky you have had a day, a week, or several to be on vacation and really slow down.  Now, if one could only preserve, conserve, or can that easy, carefree sensation to be enjoyed in small doses throughout the week.  So far, it can't be preserved, conserved, or canned, but it can be sipped.

High tea or just a simple afternoon tea doesn't need to take that long and it may be exactly what you need.  For special occasions you can head to the Park Plaza to enjoy teas selected by a tea sommelier, but you don't have to spend time driving into town or money paying for parking.

Take a few minutes in the afternoon, lay out some play dough, a special "tea time" activity for the kids, send them to the playroom or their own rooms, and then set yourself a timer 15 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes.  Tell the kids they are expected to let you sit and enjoy your tea until the timer goes off.  Grab a magazine, a book, your iPod, whatever it is that you don't have time to read, a biscuit or a chocolate square, and your tea.  If you need a little caffeine brew some black, green or white tea.  If you just want to relax caffeine-free go for a tisane (herbal tea).

If you have an electric kettle the water takes minutes to boil and just a few more minutes are needed to steep the tea, open the cookie tin, grab your book and find a chair.  Be sure to set a timer so you don't cheat yourself and so that the kids have a cue.  It may take one or two days before the kids get the hang of it, but you'll soon find they play long beyond the timer.  It is a learned skill that many kids don't have the time or space to experience as much as they once did generations ago.

Now, for something completely different, if you're back from vacation, you're feeling relaxed and just happy to be home and you want something fun to try, then Tempo Bistro has a nice little Sweet Tea Martini.

To mix your own you will need:

  • Hound Dog or Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea Vodka
  • Some home-brewed iced-tea
  • a splash of lemon juice
  • a splash of simple syrup
  • a half sugared rim
  • a lemon garnish (it will make it that much more festive and the lemon oils from the zest will add flavour as well)
To tea! ttyl your BFF (Boston Family Foodie)
