Oh Canada/Our home and native land...
For those of you not at home in your native land, Canada Day is a great way to get the July celebrations started. For those of you who aren't aware of Canada Day or even Canada it's that large mass of a country that sits above the United States where people apologize a lot, where health care is a right not a privilege (No we don't have to wait months for a doctor's appointment - unlike here.), and where some fabulous comedians, singers, and artists were born.
Despite all those great things, many of us choose to live in this country, and we'll be celebrating that on the 4th!
Canadians invite your friends to taste some of your favourite childhood treats. Americans, feel free to be honourary Canadians for the day. The New York Times has a fabulous Op Ed piece with some bits and pieces of what us Canucks living "abroad" are missing from home.
In Boston, you can find Coffee Crisp at Cardullo's Gourmet Shoppe or at Star Market. If it is poutine that you are craving, then head out to Montreal French Fries or even better take a road trip to Montreal. If it is music you are craving then download some of your favourite tunes from Sarah McLachlan, Great Big Sea, Ashley MacIsaac, the Bare Naked Ladies, Leonard Cohen, Holly Cole Trio, or your favourite red, white, and red bands.
As for the food, I'm sorry to say, we are having leftovers from our fabulous farm and farmer's market dinner last night combined with those from a 5 year old's diy Vietnamese springroll party. For a splash of Canada, we'll be topping off the meal with some butter tarts.
If you are looking for some great Canadian fare to serve tonight or to add to your dinner Canadian Living has some great recipes for you and a fun slide show of Canadian food. Food Network Canada also offers some classic Canadian flavours in their recipes. The folks at Tidings Magazine also share their thoughts and recipes for Canada Day.
Bon appétit. ttyl your CBFF (Canadian Boston Family Foodie)
