Savage’s Bakery in Homewood has been an institution to Birmingham residents since 1939. The Bakery is celebrating its 70th Anniversary which makes it a perfect candidate for a bakery spotlight.

I stopped by Savage’s on a Saturday during a leisurely day of strolling down main street in Homewood and the place was a whirlwind of activity. While peering into the massive showcase filled with everything you can image, a fellow customer remarked to her husband, “Now this is a bakery.” She is absolutely correct. The bakery offers made from scratch cookies, pastries, cupcakes and breads galore. Everything is made onsite every morning and placed in the glass case. Day Old baked goods are stacked on shelves near the door while the fresh breads and rolls are against the wall. On this particular Saturday I picked through Rye Bread, Poppy Seed Rolls, Almond Coffee Cake, Tiny Biscuits and Stone Ground Whole Wheat Bread on the Day Old shelves. Not even a skilled eye would have been able to tell the items were a day old, however.

Savage’s is known for its fantastic sugar cookies cut into all sorts of shapes and coated in a hard shell of royal icing. The bakery actually terms them Customized Butter Cookies but they are known to most as sugar cookies. The most common and popular of these cookies at the bakery are the Watermelon Slices and Orange Smilie Faces. They are available in all shapes and sizes, however, and they change with the seasons. Another favorite at the bakery is the Petit Four. These classic desserts are not only beautiful but they are so delicately delicious that they almost dissolve in your mouth. Even though they are super rich and sugary, like potato chips, it’s hard to just eat one. All sorts of generic cookies are available daily including peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, and chocolate chip. Another trademark cookie available year round is the Gingerbread Man which comes in a mini size, too. They are absolutely adorable and equally as tasty.

I could ramble on for pages about the amazing desserts Savage’s has to offer. The bakery sells pastries such as Cream Cheese Danish and Bon Bons and just looking at these flaky pastries will make your mouth water. Breads such as Sun Dried Tomato and Cinnamon Raisin are just a few of what you’ll find. The website has an excellent list of the pastries, breads and cakes sold at the bakery.

Savage’s has also been baking and decorating cakes for weddings and special occasions for decades. Bride and Groom’s cakes are available and are custom made to fit your needs. Party platters full of pastries, cookies or deli meats can be ordered as well . Last but not least, Savage’s serves lunch so you can have something salty to go with your sweet. All kinds of sandwiches and salad plates are served and many salads such as chicken, pasta and egg salad are sold by the pound just in case you want to share with the family.

Savage’s Bakery is truly a special bakery with a wonderful old fashioned flair and atmosphere. You will not be disappointed when you visit. In fact, after you stop by once, you’ll be hooked for years to come.
