Campfire at Koomer Ridge Campgrounds
For the past couple of years people have been talking a lot about the staycation.  With the crummy economy and people losing their jobs, a lot of people do not have the money to take the week long vacations that they used too.  After a few years of the staycation though it can get boring.  Especially for the kids.  Why not try an extended version of the staycation?
State Parks in our area have a lot to offer most of them including camping.  Pack up the car when you get off work on Friday night and enjoy a nice weekend in the wilderness.  Lexington's central location is perfect for picking a park that is within a short driving distance.  Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge, Cave Run Lake, Cave City, and Big Bone Lick just to name a few are all within an hour and a half drive from Lexington and are only a couple of the 52 state parks located in Kentucky. Most parks charge about $18 a night for a primitive camp site.
If you plan your trip ahead, you can stock up on hot dogs, hamburgers, and other tasty camping treats when they are on sale so you do not have any added expense of food.  If you do not have a tent ask a friend or neighbor to borrow one, see what you can find on craigslist or shop around and see what kind of deals you can find.  When we bought our tent last year we only paid about $25 for it, and no it is not fancy but it gets the job done!
For the cost of a tank of gas you can have a weekend of fun and memories that will last a lifetime.  Cheap, easy trips like these also make it easier to have more than one summer vacation!
