What is being called an historic bill passed the House moments ago, moving health care reform one step closer to reality. Debate related to the bill lasted nearly all day, and of the two amendments considered on the floor, the only one to pass prohibited public funds from going towards abortion procedures.
The bill passed just barely, with the final number in favor being 220. To put that in perspective, 218 votes were required. Only one vote was cast in favor by a Republican, which was cast by the freshman representative from Louisiana.
The debate will now move on to the Senate, where a similar bill will be debated. If passed, a conference committee will then convene to hammer out details and propose a final version that both the House and Senate will have to approve before Obama can sign it into law.
