During last night's debate Obama seized the opportunity while discussing Iraq to paint John McCain as a warhawk waiting in the wings to send U.S. soldiers to their deaths in unnecessary foreign conflicts. Obama hit McCain with his own language at one point, as he said McCain was right that he didn't understand. Obama said he didn't understand why the U.S. went into Iraq rather than finish the job in Afghanistan and "crush" al Qaeda and places this error of judgement on McCain for calling for a war in Iraq in the first place.
Obama went on to hit McCain on his infamous "Bomb bomb Iran" performance and on wanting to 'annihilate' North Korea.
McCain's response?
The continued insistance the Bomb Iran performance was a joke and that since he served in Vietnam, and was a POW he fully understands the sacrafice these soldiers are making.
I am not so inclined to believe it. McCain may have suffered while a POW, and still struggles with some of those injuries, but I do not believe he fully understands what he is telling the American people just what they will have to sacrifice. Especially should Palin give him a convincing argument on going after Russia as well. Add in the fact he is able to 'joke' about bombing Iran, and perhaps it will be clear that he seems to no longer be able to relate to the American soldier and their family. McCain's response was not enough for me, and I think Obama did a pretty good job depicting McCain as a nominee who would like to engage in further conflicts that will continue to add to the trillions in dollars of debt this country owes others.
