With the general election looming ahead, it seems McCain has quite the uphill battle ahead of him. He is facing an average 7.5 point deficit in the polls with mere weeks left in the campaign. But it isn't just the national polls. Electoral predictions, based on state by state polls, also show McCain far behind, and seemingly losing the battle in battleground states.
McCain last shot at Obama will come at tonight's debate at Hofstra University. McCain needs to go after Obama hard and fast, with likely more than a few below-the-belt shots. Voters always say they disapprove, yet it is these shots that tend to push them away from a candidate if aimed properly. On top of this, McCain needs a stellar gaffe-free performance (no more "that one" comments) and needs to try and corner Obama into making a ridiculous/nonsensical statement or force him into some other gaffe. McCain needs to appear aggressive without making it seem like that it is his anger that is in control. Anything else will just be a win for Obama, allowing for his lead in the polls to continue to skyrocket as McCain's campaign tumbles, unless there is some huge game changer tonight or a late October surprise in the coming weeks.
In short, McCain has a tall order in front of him. He has a lot of hoops to try and jump through to get his campaign back on track. My experience is somewhere along the way McCain won't stick the landing, but it might just well cost him the election.
