Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore will be hosting the 11th annual Broadway Barks, a star-studded adopt-a-thon benefiting New York City’s animal shelters by connecting homeless dogs and cats with potential pet parents on Saturday, July 11, 2009 in Shubert Alley (between 44th and 45th Streets, between Broadway and 8th Ave.).
The festivities of the adopt-a-thon, produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and sponsored by the ASPCA and PEDIGREE®, with additional sponsorship by the New York Times, will begin at 3:30pm and the celebrity presentation of pets will be from 5:30 to 6:30pm. A variety of animals will be featured and available for adoption.
Rupert Everett, Angela Lansbury and David Hyde Pierce join numerous celebrity figures in bringing a more powerful voice to animal shelters, rescue groups and adoption agencies, providing a well needed communication outlet to agencies and the public in order to deepen awareness and foster relationships.
Last year, the event drew in over 7,000 animal lovers, and 26 NYC animal shelters participated; a total of over 125 pets were adopted. Mary Tyler Moore said that as a result of these efforts,15,000 fewer animals have been euthanized in city shelters compared to 2003.
An auction of celebrity autographed memorabilia will also take place, and donations will be accepted throughout the event. All the proceeds will go directly to the participating shelters, groups and agencies. Bernadette Peters will be signing her New York Times bestseller, Broadway Barks, a colorful children’s book mapping the journey of a lost dog who found his way to Shubert Alley. Proceeds from the book will benefit Broadway Barks.
