For many, diners evoke a sense of nostalgia. These restaurants often offer a multitude of choices from pancakes and omelettes to shrimp cocktail and porterhouse steaks. Many diners are purveyors of comfort, from the friendly waitstaff to the roomy booths. Diners are generally affordable places to eat. For these two diners, that is where the similarities ended.
The Nautilus Diner on York Rd. in Timonium, MD is lovely in its classic diner style. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive. The menu was overwhelming. You'll find it difficult to choose from what seems like hundreds of choices. What better way to find out if the food would follow the atmosphere than by choosing meatloaf and mashed potatoes, a comfort classic. It was a disappointment. The meat was dry and salty and the mushroom gravy was more like a tomato sauce. The mashed potatoes were serviceable with what tasted like a canned gravy. To his credit, the waiter offered to replace the meal with something different.
Frank's Diner in Jessup, MD is less flashy than the Nautilus, what it lacks in style, it more than makes up for in taste. The menu, while not as extensive as Nautilus, still has quite a variety for the hungry traveler. If you're seeking comfort food, try the chicken and waffles. They are a real treat and a surprse. The waffle is light, fluffy and slightly sweet. The battered chicken is moist and flavorful. The surprise is that it came frozen. Don't let that stop you. Order it. And the prices couldn't be beat. The meal will set you back half of what you'd pay at the Nautilus.
If you want atmosphere, visit Nautilus Diner. If you want a tasty meal, Frank's Diner is a good place to visit.
