The House passed a healthcare reform bill last night by a vote by 220-215. The plan would cost $1.1 trillion over 10 years.
Democrats had to make concession to Republicans regarding insurance coverage for abortions to secure the winning vote. Anti-abortion Democrats offered a amendment that would ban the public option from covering the procedure. With 64 Democrats in favor, the amendment was approved by 240 to 194.
President Obama praised the passing of the bill that will now go to the Senate for approval. The Bill “will provide stability and is legislation that is paid for,” Obama said. Republicans said they would fight healthcare reform condemned the vote and said they would oppose the measure as it proceeds on its legislative route. “This government takeover has got a long way to go before it gets to the president’s desk, and I’ll continue to fight it tooth and nail at every turn,” said Representative Kevin Brady, a Republican from Texas. “Health care is too important to get it wrong.” “We did what we promised the American people we would do,” said Rep. Steny Hoyer. The Democrat from Maryland and majority leader warned, “Much work remains.”
President Obama praised the House and called on the Senate to approve the bill. “I am absolutely confident it will,” he said, “and I look forward to signing comprehensive health insurance reform into law by the end of the year.”
The House legislation is almost 2,000 pages and requires most Americans to get health insurance or suffer from penalties, a policy that Republicans protest.
