First Lady Michelle Obama took to the South Lawn today with elementary students to harvest vegetables while encouraging the kids to eat healthy.
I watched while students from D.C. based Bancroft Elementary and Kimball Elementary schools dug up sweet potatoes, carrots, lettuce and fennel plants which were carted away in a wheelbarrow. The First Lady reminded the students to eat their veggies and posed with the participants after the harvesting was done. I spoke with a groundskeeper on my way to the location on the south lawn and he suggested that the Obamas’ actively uses the White House lawn more than the Bush family. “With the girls and these various events it is much busier,” the White House groundskeeper said.
Mrs. Obama told the students that the 740 pounds of vegetables drawn from the garden did not cost as much as buying them in the supermarket. “So for less than two hundred dollars we have planted enough food to feed not just the folks at the White House, but we've also given a lot of food to some of our neighbors, and we're going to do that today,” the First Lady noted.
After the digging was over, the First Lady hugged several students and they posed for pictures with the vegetables harvested. Then the students were given a snack as the First Lady moved onto another scheduled event. The White House chefs and a handful of teachers were also in attendance today.
