
Akron/Family at Johnny Brenda's, Friday September 11 at 9pm, $12
On Friday night Akron/Family brings their experimental folk/rock to Johnny Brenda's along with Jeffrey Lewis. Akron/Family consists of three core members who are known for their improvisational live shows, often with guests, which have likely influenced their continuously evolving sound. Their latest album, Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free, was released this past April.
Rascal Flatts with Darius Rucker at Susquehanna Bank Center, Friday September 11 at 8pm
Also on Friday night, country music band Rascal Flatts will play at the Susquehanna Bank Center with Darius Rucker, former lead singer of Hootie & The Blowfish. Rascal Flatts, one of the most successful country acts of recent years, is touring in support of their latest album Unstoppable. Darius Rucker has become a successful solo country artist and his latest album, Learn to Live, was released in 2008.
Slo-Mo featuring Mic Wrecka at Johnny Brenda's, Saturday September 12 at 9pm, $10
On Saturday night Philadelphia hip-hop/rock band Slo-Mo featuring Mic Wrecka will hold their album release party at Johnny Brenda's, along with fellow Philly bands The Fractals and Adam and Dave's Bloodline. The new album from Slo-Mo f. Mic Wrecka, whose sound is a combination of hip hop and steel guitar, is called Gimme What You Got, and is available for pre-order now.
Robin Trower at TLA, Saturday September 12 at 9pm, $29.50
On Saturday night at TLA blues rock guitarist Robin Trower will play along with Johnny D'Francesco Power Trio. Robin Trower was a member of the successful 60s band Procol Harum before going solo, and has since worked with numerous artists including Jack Bruce, former Cream bassist, with whom he has a new album of live recordings called Seven Moons Live scheduled for release in October. Trower also just released his solo album What Lies Beneath in July.
Fruit Bats at Kung Fu Necktie, Saturday September 12 at 7pm, $10
Saturday night at Kung Fu Necktie the Fruit Bats will play along with Pronto and Kevin Barker. The Fruit Bats were formed by Eric Johnson, who is also a member of The Shins, and with the Fruit Bats he makes really fun, catchy folk rock/pop. They just released the album The Ruminant Band on August 4. Supporting act Kevin Barker is a member of the group Vetiver, another band that Eric Johnson sometimes tours with.
Ladyhawke at TLA, Sunday September 13 at 8pm, $26/$29.50 day-of
New Zealand singer/songwriter Ladyhawke will play at TLA on Sunday night with Ida Maria, Frankmusik and Semi Precious Weapons. Ladyhawke's self-titled debut album, released in September 2008, has been a huge success and her electro-pop/rock has drawn comparisons to Peaches and Pat Benatar.
Fun. at North Star Bar, Tuesday September 15 at 7pm, $12/$15 day-of
On Tuesday night New York band fun. will play at North Star Bar with Miniature Tigers. Fun. just released their first album, Aim and Ignite, on August 25 and are already making a splash on the indie rock scene by making music that sounds like their name might suggest.
Sian Alice Group at Johnny Brenda's, Tuesday September 15 at 9pm, $10
Tuesday night at Johnny Brenda's is London band Sian Alice Group with local bands The War on Drugs and Dark Circles. The Sian Alice Group is an experimental/avant-rock group who's music has been described as ethereal and epic. Their latest album, called Troubled, Shaken, Etc., was released in August.
The Books at First Unitarian Church, Tuesday September 15 at 8pm, $15
Also on Tuesday night at First Unitarian Church are The Books with Lymbyc Systym. The Books are an experimental duo who make music that is like an audio collage of guitar, strings, lyrics, pieces of conversation and random sounds, with a result that is unique and oddly relaxing. Their last album was 2005's Lost and Safe, and they are said to be working on a new album. Earlier this year, their interpretation of Nick Drake's Cello Song was included on the compilation album Dark Was The Night.
