Alice in Chains (Photo: James Minchin).

There are a lot of bands touring this fall, from small acts to some of music's biggest names, and many of them will be stopping in Philadelphia over the next few months.  Here's a look at some of the highlights coming up in the first week of September.

Throw Me the Statue at Johnny Brenda's, Thursday September 3 at 9pm, $10

Starting out tonight at Johnny Brenda's is Throw Me the Statue with The Brunettes and Nurses.  Throw Me the Statue just released their second album, Creaturesque, on August 4th and their catchy indie rock/pop has drawn comparisons to The Shins.  Interestingly supporting act The Brunettes, from New Zealand, were hand-picked by The Shins to open for the band during their 2005 tour.  Their last album, Structure & Cosmetics, was released in 2007.

Alice in Chains at TLA, Saturday September 5 at 9pm, SOLD OUT

Reunited rock band Alice in Chains will play a sold out show on Saturday night at TLA. The band was hugely successful in the 90s but haven't released an album since 1995, and lost lead singer Layne Stanley to a drug overdose in 2002.  They now have a new singer and their first album in 14 years, Black Gives Way to Blue, is scheduled for release on September 29.

Chairlift at Kung Fu Necktie, Sunday September 6 at 8pm, $12

On Sunday night Brooklyn-based band Chairlift will play at Kung Fu Necktie with John Maus and Power Animal.  Chairlift, who describe their music as "folktronica," recently gained a lot of attention when their song "Bruises" was featured in an iPod commercial.  Their latest album, Does You Inspire You, was released in April.

Hugh Cornwell at Johnny Brenda's, Tuesday September 8 at 9pm, $12

On Tuesday night Johnny Brenda's welcomes Hugh Cornwell, singer/guitarist/songwriter from the UK band The Stranglers, who were successful throughout Europe in the late '70s and '80s.  Cornwell's latest album, Hooverdam, was released in June 2008.  Also playing on Tuesday night are Philadelphia bands Beretta 76 and Persona.

Autolux at Johnny Brenda's, Wednesday September 9 at 9pm, $13

Wednesday night, alternative rock trio Autolux will play at Johnny Brenda's along with Sleepy Sun and Mini Mansions.  Autolux is said to be working on the long-awaited follow-up to 2004's Future Perfect (produced by T-Bone Burnett), tentatively scheduled for release this fall.  San Francisco-based experimental/psych-rock band Sleepy Sun is one of those bands that defies comparisons and needs to be experienced to be understood.  Their latest album, Embrace, was released earlier this year.  Mini Mansions is a LA-based psych-rock band featuring Michael Shuman of Queens of the Stoneage.
