It's hard to believe, but summer is already almost over...so what better way to enjoy the final days of August then to check out some live music. Here's a look at some of the shows taking place in the Philly area this week.
Wednesday August 26
These United States - M-Room, 8pm
Kentucky and Washington DC-based band These United States are playing tonight at the M-Room, along with Remote Islands and Two Handed Engine. As their roots might suggest, These United States sound like a combination of indie and country rock, and they are currently touring in support of their new album Everything Touches Everything, set for release on September 1st.
Thursday August 27
Blink 182 with Weezer - Susquehanna Bank Center, 6:30pm
On Thursday night reunited punk rock band Blink 182 will bring their summer tour to the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden with supporting acts Weezer, Taking Back Sunday and Chester French. This is Blink 182's first time touring together since 2004, and the band is currently working on a new album. Weezer is also working on a new album scheduled for release on October 27 2009, off of which the first single, "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To," was just released yesterday.
Mother Mother - North Star Bar, 8pm
If large outdoor concerts aren't your thing, also playing on Thursday night at North Star Bar is Canadian indie pop/rock band Mother Mother with the New Motels and Glass Empires. Mother Mother's modern combinations of guitars, keyboards and mixed male/female vocal harmonies have made them a success in their native Canada, and their most recent album, O My Heart, came out in September 2008.
Friday August 28
An American Chinese - Johnny Brenda's, 9pm
Philadelphia band An American Chinese will bring their "intriguingly awesome lo-fi indie shoegazy pop" (www.johnnybrendas.com) to Johnny Brenda's on Friday night, along with Savoir Adore and fellow Philly bands The Armchairs and Grandchildren. An American Chinese has one release to date, 2007's Panic Pilgrim EP , but are currently working on a new full length album.
Saturday August 29
The Flaming Lips - Festival Pier, 7pm
On Saturday night alternative/"space" rock band The Flaming Lips come to Festival Pier, with supporting acts Explosions in the Sky and White Dwarfs. The Flaming Lips are known for their spectacular live shows, during which you are likely to see costumes and lots of lights, balloons and confetti. The band will release their new album Embryonic, their first since At War With the Mystics in 2006, this fall, but three tracks are available now on iTunes.
Sunday August 30
Staind - Festival Pier, 7pm
Festival Pier closes out its summer concert season on Sunday night with rock band Staind, and opening bands Shinedown and Chevelle. Staind has had a number of hits throughout their 13-year career and their most recent studio album, 2008's The Illusion of Progress, debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Company of Thieves - M-Room, 8pm
Also on Sunday night, indie rock trio Company of Thieves will play at the M-Room with the Queen Killing Kings. Company of Thieves released their critically acclaimed debut album Ordinary Riches earlier this year and have since been featured on iTunes as a Discovery Download and Indie Spotlight band.
Monday August 31
Solillaquists of Sound - M-Room, 8pm
Coming to the M-Room on Monday night are Solillaquists of Sound, touring in support of their new album No More Heroes, released August 4th of this year. With a theme of heroes, the latest album from the Florida hip-hop group is packed with social commentary and messages of self empowerment, which is sure to entail a passionate live performance.
