With its demolition scheduled for November 2009, the Spectrum will host its final concerts during the month of October, and there are some big acts coming in to give the building its musical send-off.
Bruce Springsteen, who has played the Spectrum 30 times throughout his career, will do four shows with his E Street Band on October 13, 14, 19 and 20. Limited tickets are still available for these shows at $101 per ticket. Leonard Cohen will play Thursday October 22, with tickets on sale now ranging from $36.50 - $250. Pearl Jam will close out the Spectrum with four shows on October 27, 28, 30 and 31. The shows on the 28th and 30th are sold out but tickets for the newly added October 27th and 31st shows go on sale this Friday at $77 per ticket (See: Pearl Jam to play two final shows at the Spectrum - UPDATED August 10). Tickets for all of these shows are available at comcasttix.com.
While some might know the Spectrum for its history as a sports arena, it also has an impressive history as a music venue and is known by performers for its excellent acoustics. Some of the most legendary musical acts of the '60s and '70s played at the Spectrum, including Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Who, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, The Jackson Five, Elvis, The Band and Bob Marley and the Wailers. The Grateful Dead played there 53 times, more than any other musical act. The remaining members of the group, touring as The Dead, played the Spectrum for their last time earlier this year on May 1st and 2nd. A full list of concerts at the Spectrum can be found here: http://www.rememberthespectrum.com/300/Concerts.asp. Comcast-Spectacor and the Philadelphia Daily News joined together to compile a book of stories and photographs of some of the venue's most memorable moments, called God Bless the Spectrum, which can be ordered online at www.rememberthespectrum.com.
